Weddings Gretna

Gretna Green was well and truly put on the map by Lord Hardwicke’s Marriage Act of 1753 which forbade the marriage of two people under 21 years old, unless they had the consent of their parents. The act did not apply in Scotland and so Gretna Green, just over the Scottish border from England, became the centre for runaway marriages. Today Gretna Green is still the marriage capital of Scotland, playing home to over 5000 weddings each year.
